Sports and Season of Play
As a member of BC School Sports (BCSS) we offer competitive team sports for grades
8 - 12. Our teams fall under the guidelines of BCSS, as well as several club sports outside of the BCSS regulations. We are a member of Central Vancouver Island Athletic Association (CVIAA), North Vancouver Island Secondary School Association (NVISSA) and Vancouver Island Secondary School Athletic Association (VISSAA).
We offer programs for:
Grade 8 teams
Jr Teams - Grade 9 & 10
Sr Teams - Grade 11 & 12

Team Fees
-
Each athlete must pay a team fee to cover the costs of tournaments and travel fees.

Each player will be issued a uniform (where applicable) only after submitting a uniform deposit.

Gulf Islands Secondary School will pay all league play fees for BCSS, NVISSAA and CVIAA through the Athletic Fee ($25) collected from the student athletes.

All costs associated with non-league games and tournaments will be paid for by players. These include entry fees, travel, overnight accommodations and meals.

The GISS Sport PAC, will cover ferry fares associated with league game travel and up to two tournaments for each sport.

Athletes will be asked to participate in minimum one fundraiser during their season to subsidize costs.
Sport Participation

All GISS athletic teams encourage participation at all levels. Students are expected to attend all practices and games; when unable to do so, notify the coach before hand.

All GISS athletes will achieve academic potential by working in curricular courses to the best of their ability and by fulfilling classroom expectations.

Coaches will select the team members based on best judgment and in consideration of individual athlete and team needs. In regard to junior athletes playing up, coaches need to communicate with other coaches, parents and individual players about the team placement that will provide the best experience for the athlete and development of program.

Coaches at the junior level will emphasize equal playing time of players to promote athlete development.

Coaches at the senior level will field competitive teams and thus, use their own discretion when considering line-ups and playing time.
